Weirder The Better

A Vegan Collagen Alternative: Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is an extremely versatile superfood and makes for a great vegan alternative to the collagen trend right now. Diatomaceous Earth comes from the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton (essentially, fossil shell flour!); a type of hard shelled algae from fresh water sources. It is very rich in silica, 89% silica, and science shows that silica will boost collagen production in your body by 50%, to keep your skin, hair, and nails strong.

Let’s get nerdy…

The Difference Between Silica & Collagen

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that is primarily found in the flesh and connective tissues of mammals. It is the glue that holds our bodies together. Collagen is mostly made up of silica and it is responsible for forming approximately 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content.

Silica works similarly to antioxidants found in high-antioxidant foods because it retains its traits as a stable particle even while continuously suspended in a liquid medium, allowing it to fight free radical damage. It’s broken down into a colloidal form, which acts like a detoxifier for the blood since it carries an electrical charge that attaches to free radicals and other harmful toxins. Silica particles can then neutralize the charge of free radicals and remove them from the body through sweat, urine and feces, which slows oxidative damage and has anti-aging effects.

Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth

Benefits can include:

  • improved digestion and more regular bowel movements
  • better liver and colon functioning
  • improved detoxification and removal of heavy metals
  • stronger immune function and protection from illnesses
  • a cleaner home, free from parasites, bed bugs and viruses
  • healthier-looking skin, hair and nails
  • stronger bones and protection from fractures or osteoporosis
  • improved joint and ligament health
  • improved energy
  • for dogs and cats, cleaner skin and flea control

How To Use Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is safe for humans and animals to consume and also beneficial for skin, so it’s used both inside and outside the body. The Food and Drug Administration lists food grade diatomaceous earth as “Generally Recognized as Safe,” which means it’s legally allowed to be added to many different types of foods, beverages and supplements. The brand we chose for March’s Healthy Glow Box is Pure Organic. It is mined in the desert of Nevada and cleaned, washed, to be handled as a certified food grade mineral.

Diatomaceous Earth is basically tasteless with a gritty texture. Mix it into water or another liquid of your choice such as juice, yogurt or a smoothie. Start small – about one teaspoon with water once a day. It’s best used on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after eating.

Diatomaceous Earth Magnified

One is that on a microscopic level, the diatomaceous earth particles are very sharp looking. Because of these sharp particles, DE is also good for colon cleansing & parasite control.

So there you have it! A nutrient-rich, plant-based alternative to collagen! Give it a try and let us know what you think! If you missed the Healthy Glow Box, you can still order it by going here.
