Energy Boosting Superfood Smoothie Recipe

Here is a superfood smoothie recipe that will help you run faster, train harder and stretch further!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • ½ ripe avocado
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina
  • 1 teaspoon maca
  • 2 pitted medjool dates
  • Pinch pink Himalayan salt (this will really pull the flavors together nicely!)
  • Sprinkle of cacao nibs

Method:

  1. Place all ingredients into your blender and blend starting on low and gradually to high for 1 minute. Add more or less almond milk depending on the smoothie consistency you prefer.
  2. Pour into your favorite pre-workout cup and top with cacao nibs.
  3. Enjoy!

Here’s why this recipe works:

Maca- from Peru, Maca is a root that has been used for long and sustained boosts of energy. It is known for it’s stamina and endurance properties and has also been shown to help the body burn more stored fat instead of sugar during a workout which helps with improving results post-workout.

Cacao powder- the stuff that chocolate is made from! This incredible superfood contains a compound called theobromine which when used in the body releases a source of energy. It is also high in antioxidants to balance inflammation post-workout from tired muscles; the magnesium in cacao also helps to aid in muscle recovery.

And one of our favorite superfoods…

Spirulina- NASA helped bring this mighty green superfood to fame when it successfully used spirulina as a dietary supplement for astronauts on space missions believe it or not! It is a single-celled algae full of nutritional value. For fitness purposes, our body uses this mineral to create red blood cells (to oxygenate our blood). Healthy red blood cells increase our ability to build and maintain muscle mass PLUS it is a great source of Vitamin B which is essential to creating ATP energy in our bodies. If our bodies are low in these nutrients we start to feel tired and lethargic, which as you know, will hinder your energy levels before working out!
